Synopsis of The Gondoliers

  • Setting: The opera is set in Venice and the mythical kingdom of Barataria.
  • Plot Overview:
The story begins in Venice, where two charming gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, are about to marry two contadine (peasants). However, their wedding is interrupted by the arrival of the Grand Inquisitor, who reveals a shocking truth: one of the gondoliers is actually the heir to the throne of Barataria, but his identity was confused in infancy with that of a commoner. The Grand Inquisitor further explains that the young prince was stolen by the Apache (a revolutionary) and brought up as a gondolier. The opera then follows the two gondoliers as they are taken to Barataria to rule jointly. However, due to a mix-up in their upbringing, neither can rule alone, and they must rely on the Grand Inquisitor to sort out the succession. The confusion is compounded by the fact that the true heir was baptized by a contadina who is now married to the other gondolier. This leads to a series of humorous situations, mistaken identities, and romantic entanglements as the characters try to resolve the succession crisis.
