Synopsis of The Gondoliers

The story begins in Venice, where two charming gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, are popular and well-liked. They are both married to the beautiful Contessina and Gianetta, respectively, in a ceremony performed by the “Duchess of Plaza-Toro” and her retinue.However, it is revealed that one of the gondoliers was accidentally switched at birth with the infant son of the King of Barataria. This means one of them is the rightful heir to the throne, while the other is merely a gondolier. The King of Barataria has recently died without an heir, and the Grand Inquisitor has decreed that the new king must be found.The two gondoliers are summoned to Barataria to assume the throne, but the complication is that they cannot rule separately, and the Duchess’s daughter, Casilda, who is betrothed to the King, is also involved. To further complicate matters, the Grand Inquisitor has a secret agenda.The opera satirizes social hierarchies, republicanism, and the complexities of Venetian society.
