Synopsis
“Oliver!” is a classic musical adaptation of Charles Dickens‘ novel Oliver Twist, with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart. The Hastleons’ 2023 production at the White Rock Theatre brought this timeless story to life with a talented cast of young performers, vibrant staging, and memorable musical numbers.
The story follows Oliver Twist, an orphan boy born into a harsh workhouse environment. After daring to ask for more food, Oliver is sold to an undertaker but soon runs away to London. There, he falls in with a group of young pickpockets led by the cunning Fagin. Despite the dangers and hardships, Oliver’s inherent goodness shines through.
Throughout the musical, Oliver encounters a cast of unforgettable characters, including the kind-hearted Nancy, the villainous Bill Sikes, and the wealthy Mr. Brownlow, who ultimately offers Oliver a chance at a better life. The show explores themes of poverty, innocence, and the quest for belonging, all underscored by iconic songs such as “Consider Yourself,” “Food, Glorious Food,” and “Where Is Love?”
The Hastleons’ production was praised for its energetic performances, strong ensemble work, and the emotional depth brought by the young cast. The White Rock Theatre provided an intimate and engaging setting, making this rendition of “Oliver!” a memorable event for the Hastings community.
