Synopsis
Rodgers and Hammerstein‘s classic musical “The King and I” was brought to life by the Hastleons in their 2019 production at the White Rock Theatre. The musical tells the compelling story of Anna Leonowens, a widowed English schoolteacher who travels to Siam (modern-day Thailand) to teach the children of King Mongkut.
The story explores the cultural clashes and growing mutual respect between Anna and the King as they navigate their vastly different worlds. Anna’s modern ideas challenge the King’s traditional ways, leading to moments of conflict, humor, and ultimately understanding. The musical features iconic songs such as “Getting to Know You,” “Shall We Dance?” and “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” which highlight the evolving relationship between the characters.
The Hastleons’ production was praised for its strong cast, beautiful musical numbers, and the heartfelt portrayal of this timeless tale of friendship, respect, and cultural exchange. The White Rock Theatre provided an intimate setting that allowed audiences to fully engage with the emotional depth and charm of the show.

Reviews
Musical worthy of the West End
In this world of gloom, I spent last night at a wonderful production of The King and I at the White Rock theatre. This chased away the grey skies and is easily as good as any West End production. The singing is quite outstanding, as is the choreography. The costumes are sumptuous and the whole cast are superb. It is hard to think this is not a professional show as even to the tiniest little princess everyone in the cast are so slick and impressive. I urge everyone to go see The King and I… It had everything from humour to pathos and is a huge treat.
